Baan Pad Thai

This has got to be my favourite Thai restaurant in Brisbane. I've been to all the top rated Thai restaurants in Brisbane and compare each one with my go to dish - Chicken Pad Thai. This place does it the best. By far.

Baan Pad Thai is located in Sinnamon Park in a small corner shopping centre. It has a few tables inside and a couple of larger ones for outdoor dining. Although I never see it very busy, it's been around for years. At least 10 years from Will's memory so it must be doing something right.

Chicken Pad Thai - Thai Hot

This dish is everything a pad thai should be. A perfect balance of salty, sweet, hot and sour. The peanuts are crushed enough to add a nice crunch to the dish but not to overpower it with it's flavour. There are also delicious bits of pickled turnip in the noodles that give it a nice sweetness. I love that the noodles are all coated in the seasoning so no bite goes unbalanced. Perfectly seasoned, this is my perfect pad thai.

Beef Red Curry - Thai Hot

There are two things I absolutely hate and dread when it comes to Thai curries - watery sauces and being overly sweet. This red curry was nothing like that. It was nice and flavourful and the sauce was a good thickness to drizzle over and soak my coconut rice. I loved the thin pieces of bamboo shoot which bursts with juices in every bite. The Thai basil leaves adds a nice freshness to the otherwise heavy dish.

Coconut Rice

I use to be against ordering coconut rice at a Thai restuarant. I've had many cases where it was so sweet and creamy that it may as well have been in the dessert section as a sticky rice. Will convinced me one day to get the coconut rice here, and given this place's track record, I agreed. I'm glad I ordered it because this was still fresh and light like normal rice but with a nice hint of coconut to lift the flavour of the accompany curries.

My plate of spicy goodness

I must admit given how small Baan Pad Thai is and its unusual location, most of the time I get takeaway and don't bother dining in. Regardless, I absolutely adore this place and cannot rave about it enough. If you're ever in the area, do drop by and give this place a try.

  1. I'm a Thai food lover myself, and after reading this review, I tried it out for myself.
First impressions are that it's a cosy but busy little family run restaurant. I tend to rate Thai restaurants on 3-4 dishes.
    1. Tom Yum Soup
    2. Pad Thai
    3. Green Curry
    4. Chilli Basil Stir Fry.

Over all, it scores 2.5 out of 4.
First of all, the Tom Yum Soup is totally atrocious. My partner said that it's so bad, she'd rather sip the soup of a 2 minute noodle. The Tom Yum soup was the worse I've ever tasted. There was no sweetness, no sourness, no aroma, just salty. There were a few prawns, canned mushrooms, some slices of galangal, and a leaf. Please take a course on making a decent Tom Yum Soup.

The Pad Thai was the saving grace. Thumbs up for this - Close to the best I've had.

The green curry was average, a little runny but good balanced flavour.

The Chilli Basil was quite nice - different to other 'suburban' Thai restaurants where they make it a little more saucy. This dish was more dry, and lighter in flavour. The beans were slightly on the raw side, which I guess is extra healthy.

So overall, 2.5 out of 4 possible points.

    1. Thank you for your comment atomic_maton. I must agree, I do remember trying their tom yum soup and it wasn't memorable and I haven't tried their chilli basil stir fry. But how amazing is that pad thai!? It's definitely the best I've ever had, never been to Thailand though.
