Just Poppy's. Brisbane's Best Burgers- Stop 1

The first restaurant in my 'Brisbane's Best Burgers' stand off is Just Poppy's. Most would not have heard of this place and would hardly believe it's currently ranked No. 2 Burger Joint on Urbanspoon. I understand that the ranking system can get a bit out of balance in terms of categories, but I think it deserves it's spot up there.

Just Poppy's is nestled away in the western suburbs of Brisbane. Even then, it's hidden deep in Riverhills at an unassuming shopping complex. I don't even think it's off a main road. Location besides, this place was busy for 11:00am on a weekend. It seems more of a takeaway place than dine in. Either way, there's seating outside, most of which were taken up by the time we got there. There were a few people waiting for take away as well. The lady serving was very pleasant, attentive and extremely efficient. Most likely the big boss.

The menu was so extensive we couldn't decide on what to order. Again my dreams of two stomachs came into mind at this point. They had chicken burgers, lamb burgers, beef burgers and rib fillet burgers. Then came the choice of chips - chips with gravy, chips and garlic, cheezy weezy chips, beer battered fries. The list goes on. Not to mention the extra sides as well.We decided to play it safe this first visit and try the usual beef patty burgers. We had heard that the cheese chips were good though and tried that too.

Cheezy Weezy Chips

I'm a big believer on keeping food simple and clean. I hate anything too sweet, too chocolatey, too creamy and before this day, too cheesy too. This reminded me of something that would appear on the TV show Man Vs. Food - ridiculously big serving sizes of greasy food all double dipped in cheese. These Cheezy Weezy chips were essentially that - deep fried potatoes covered in a melted cheese and mayonnaise mix. And they were GREAT. Moreish is the word I'm looking for. The cheese wasn't so overwhelming and the mayonnaise added a nice tang to it. It stopped the chips from getting deathly cheesey. Shameless to say we polished this off. One third of it before we even got to our burgers.

The Queenslander (Another Day in Paradise)

I love any burger that has pineapple slices. It just adds a nice sweetness to it. The tomato relish was tangy like tomato sauce but much fresher. The patty itself was good, it tasted homemade, not processed. The only criticism about this burger is that the patty had a thick crusty layer on the outside (cooked a bit too long on high heat) and the bun itself was too thin, especially the top half.

CLACKER CRACKER (For that Ring of Fire)

This burger had a spiced vegetable relish on top that was Moroccan inspired. It also had grilled capsicum and onions which gave it a slight bbq flavour. It promised a 'ring of fire' but being Nandos Extra Hot veterans, this barely brought out a tingle so don't expect anything spicy. Again the patty was a bit too crispy on the outside for my liking but at least the bun to burger ratio was good.

Sure Just Poppy's is not a branch king like Grill'd or trendy like the Bun Mobile but it sure knows how to makes a good burger and the locals know it. Definitely worth trying if you are ever in the area.

Dish I'd order again: Cheezy Weezy Chips

  1. THOSE CHIPS LOOK SO GOOD.

I so should not have read this post right now. Stomach grumbling. Where the F is Riverhills?!?!

Try Fab Burgers at The Barracks too. And don't forget Purple Gorrila. I've been to the former but not the latter but I've been meaning too (maybe we should go there?).
