My experience with Sichuan cuisine is very limited, partially due to the lack of Sichuan restuarants in Brisbane. I've heard good things about this place from friends who grew up eating Sichuan food in China so it sounded promising.
The menu had fairly non-descriptive english translations which made the dishes seem completely boring. Luckily I went with Chinese friends and they took over the ordering. We ordered 3 main dishes - all were spicy dishes and had it accompanied with steamed rice.
Shui Zhu Yu - Chef's Special fish fillets
This is a very traditional Sichuan dish. I have actually tried a version of this at Neil Perry's Asian restaurant in Sydney - Spice Temple. I remembered that one to have the most soft and tender fish and amazing broth underneath the thick layer of chilli oil. This dish had little broth and an even thicker layer of chilli oil. You are meant to just eat the fish and not any of the spices, chillis, broth or oil. They are only there to lend flavour to the fish. The fish was also coated in mixed spices which had a strong cumin taste. The fish was so flavoursome and tender, and although I did enjoy Neil Perry's version, I think his was too refined. This one packed a punch and still maintained the tenderness and delicacy of the dish. It wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be either.
Deep fried beef with dried chillis and sichuan peppercorns
The deep fried beef was crispy and salty and went great with the rice. This is the sort of dish you keep going back to because it's so flavourful and salty. The deep fried chillis weren't too spicy so you could eat it as well.
Roasted Lamb Chops with onion and cumin
This was the winning dish for me. The lamb chops were coated in a lovely salty cumin spice rub and the flavours had penetrated through the meat. The onion and capsicum garnish tasted like the typical toppings you get when you order chinese deep fried salt and pepper dishes. The only negative thing I can say was that the lamb chops had some chewy bits of fat in some areas making it hard to eat. It was a unique dish and I am absolutely loving the use of cumin in Chinese cooking.
Overall Fortune Well Sichuan Restuarant was a good experience and I would love to head back for some more spicy Sichuan food especially in this cold weather. The restaurant was busy on a Friday night but not so much that you would need a booking. I recommend trying this place out for a twist on your usual Chinese dinner, especially if you enjoy spicy foods.
Dish I'd order again: Lamb chops with onion and cumin
